1. Get Regular Dental Cleanings

I am certain you will be surprised to learn that 47% of the American population have Gum disease. This was the results of a study done in 2010 by the American Academy Of Periodontology. It is very Important to remove the live bacteria off your teeth. Some of this can be done at home with good brushing and flossing, but only a registered Dental Hygienist or Dentist can get the bacteria off your teeth from the areas where you cannot reach at home. With less bacteria in your mouth, your gums and teeth will stay healthier longer.

2. Floss Consistently

Many people reveal that they floss infrequently. The key to flossing is the consistency. This means creating a habit. The bacteria streptococcus Mutan creates cavities. The key is to control the environment that they live in by bringing in oxygen on a consistent basis. When you floss at night it mechanically removes bacteria as well as brings in oxygen. This oxygen kills bacteria. When we are inconsistent with flossing it gives the bacteria an opportunity to grow. So it is very important to floss consistently.

3. Brush, Brush, Brush

Brushing away food debris and bacterial plaque is so important. It takes approximately 2 minutes to really brush the teeth properly. It is also very important to use a soft bristle toothbrush every time you brush. Hard or medium bristles damage tooth enamel. It is also important to brush your tongue. The tongue is a nidus for bacteria. Cleaning your tongue daily reduces the amount of bacteria population that is in your mouth. Brushing frequently and cleaning the tongue leads to good overall oral health.

4. Frequent Dental Check-Ups

It is very important to have a Dentist exam your mouth at every Dental Hygiene appointment. The Dentist will perform an oral cancer prevention screening and evaluate your teeth and gums. If the Dentist recommend any treatment, it is wise to take care of it earlier rather than later. Taking care of cavities while they are small allows you to do conservative treatment that is usually shorter appointments.

5. Eat Healthy Foods

We live in a world where at times grabbing anything to eat may be the most convenient. It is important to remember that certain foods change the PH of the saliva in our mouths making it favorable to bacteria. Maintaining a healthy diet rich in calcium and avoiding sweets is key to healthy teeth.

There are many other things that we can do to keep our teeth. Here I decided to share 5 things that I consider to be the top. It is in my personal and professional experience that I have observed, that patients who achieve all these 5 things are overall healthier.
