Comprehensive Dental Exam in Tribeca, NYC

Why a comprehensive dental exam matters

A comprehensive dental exam looks beyond a quick cleaning. It’s a head-to-toe oral health review that helps catch issues early and plan smart, conservative care.

At Tribeca Smiles in New York, NY, comprehensive exams evaluate your overall health and oral hygiene status, risks for tooth/root decay and gum/bone disease, bite/TMJ issues, and the need for restorations or replacements—plus detailed X-rays for a fuller picture.

How often? We recommend a full exam annually, with preventive visits every six months to stay ahead of problems.

What’s included in your exam

  • Digital X-rays (as indicated)
  • Screening for periodontal disease and oral cancer
  • Bite and TMJ evaluation
  • Review of medical history and medications
  • Check of existing restorations and prosthetics
  • Personalized treatment planning

During your visit, Dr. Frederick Solomon, evaluates the mouth, teeth, gums, tongue, roof of the mouth, cheeks, throat, head/neck, jaw and TMJs, and your bite. He discusses findings, how they affect your health, and next steps.

Medications and medical conditions are reviewed, especially those that can contribute to dry mouth and decay. Existing dentures, bridges, and other prosthetics are checked for fit and maintenance.

Oral cancer screening ViziLite® and OralCDx®

Your exam includes an oral pre-cancer/cancer screening.

After a brief rinse, we use ViziLite® chemiluminescent light to identify soft-tissue abnormalities that may not be visible to the eye.

If a lesion needs evaluation, OralCDx® computer-assisted brush biopsy is used and submitted to OralScan Laboratories.

A patient receives a comprehensive dental exam

Do I need a compehensive dental exam?

Everyone benefits from a comprehensive exam—even if nothing hurts and your teeth look white. Many issues, including gum disease (a leading cause of tooth loss), don’t show early symptoms.

If it’s been a year since your last comprehensive exam—or you’ve never had periodontal, X-ray, or oral-cancer screening—schedule now.

  • How is a comprehensive exam different from a cleaning?

Cleanings maintain hygiene. A comprehensive exam is a full diagnostic evaluation of your oral health, risks, and function—with screenings and imaging to guide care.

  • Can acupuncture be part of my dental visit?

Healthy teeth are not just the result of going to the dentist when something goes wrong. Preventive care is vital. It can save your teeth, as well as a significant amount of money. So, we urgently recommend seeing us every six months for a preventive exam. Doing so will enable you to stay on top of issues by catching them early. We do our best to make your exam a positive experience and it also give us all a good chance to catch up with you and your busy life!

  • Do you take digital X-rays?

Yes—digital radiography is part of our general dentistry protocol when needed.
