Sinus Lift

Overview

Not every patient is suitable for dental implants. There has to be a healthy amount of bone and an appropriate amount of room for a surgical post to be placed without touching the sinus gland. This is where a sinus lift consultation comes into play. At Tribeca Smiles led by /about-dentistry-office-new-york/cosmetic-dentist/, we have a team of highly trained implant dentists ready to prepare your facial features for a sinus lift. Not enough bone height in the upper jaw, poor quality bone, or sinuses that may be too close for comfort to place a dental implant are all great reasons why you may need a sinus lift or sinus augmentation. Your sinus floor needs to be raised so that a dental implant can be effectively placed. Visit our office in New York, NY if you need to have a sinus lift procedure before a dental implant or have a referral from another practitioner. We look forward to meeting you and caring for your specific surgical needs.

Best Candidates

Candidates for a sinus lift will have limited room in the upper jaw for a surgical dental implant when the sinuses are too large or too close to the bone. During your consultation, an x-ray will be taken to measure the jaw and sinuses to determine if repositioning the sinus with/without a bone graft would be an appropriate course of action before a dental implant.

What To Expect

A sinus lift is a detailed surgical procedure that we can perform at Tribeca Smiles. After a bone graft is prepared, an incision will be made in the gum tissue at the back of the mouth. Your tissue will be raised to reveal the bone. The ready-to-place bone graft will be arranged in the required area. The sinuses will be pushed in higher and away from the jaw. Then, the incision within the gumline will be sutured closed. The bone graft will take several months to heal before a dental implant can be surgically placed. You will be sent home with a prescription pain reliever and an antibiotic to help manage the discomfort and hopefully prevent infection. We will also prepare you for how you should care for your incisions with aftercare instructions before the procedure begins.

Follow-up

We ask that you follow-up with our team at Tribeca Smiles in 7 – 10 days for suture removal. Following your sinus lift and dental implant surgeries, your dentist and periodontist will work with you to develop a treatment plan. You can expect aftercare to be familiar — you know that in order to maintain a beautiful smile, your natural teeth will always require good oral care and regular checkups. Dental implants are no different. They look and feel just like your own teeth, and they require the same type of care. You will still have to brush and floss regularly. Please call the office right away if you experience serious pain, excessive swelling, a high fever, or if the bleeding does not stop.
