Dentistry for Children

Pediatric Dentist in Tribeca, NY 10013

We enjoy working with our young patients and realize that they have unique needs when going to the dentist. We never try to push children so that they wind up fearful of the dentist’s office. We wish for their visit to be as enjoyable and comfortable as possible, as well as for them to establish life-long relationships with our dentist’s office.

Dr. Solomon encourages parents of young children to take them along to the parent’s scheduled dental appointment so the child can see what happens during the visit, and become acquainted with our team and office.

We also advise that the child’s initial visit be between 18 months and two years of age. At that age we will start to keep an eye on the growth and development of their teeth and mouth.

Comprehensive Tribeca Pediatric Dentistry Services

Our pediatric dentists recommend making your kids' first dentist appointment between the ages of 18 months and two years. We'll perform cursory evaluations during that time frame. Our goal is to get your child used to being in the dentist's chair and having their mouth looked at.

    • Preventative Care

Kids are at high risk for developing tooth decay. The main reason is that they don't practice good oral hygiene habits, like brushing and flossing regularly.

Our doctors and hygienists will discuss tips and tricks with your child that makes brushing enjoyable. We recommend making a dental cleaning appointment every six months for your child.

    • Restorative Dentistry

While we aim to avoid dental problems, there might be some times when intervention is needed. We offer various restorative dentistry services that correct issues. These services can include:

      • Fillings
      • Crowns
      • Extractions
      • Root canals
      • Bridges
    • Digital X-Rays

Our professional practice uses advanced dental technology to screen your child's teeth. Our goal is to reduce how much radiation your child is exposed to. Some of the benefits of our digital x-rays include:

      • Immediate viewing of imaging
      • Comfortable
      • Eliminates the use of harmful chemicals
      • The doctor can enlarge the x-rays to look for problems

Our digital x-rays are used for a variety of reasons. We use them to look for:

      • Impacted wisdom teeth
      • Tooth infection
      • If their baby teeth are coming out correctly
      • Cavities
      • If there's enough room for adult teeth
    • Pediatric Emergencies

Unfortunately, dental emergencies happen when you least expect them to. We offer pediatric emergency services for our patients and their families. Some of the common pediatric dental emergencies we deal with include:

      • Bitton tongue or lip
      • Fractured, chipped, or broken tooth
      • Object stuck between teeth
      • Loose tooth
      • Knocked-out tooth
      • Toothache
      • Infection

There are ways you can prevent pediatric emergencies from occurring. Don't let your kid chew on hard foods like popcorn kernels and ice. Have them wear a mouthguard if they play contact sports.

    • Fluoride and Sealants

Rinsing with fluoride can keep your teeth strong and healthy. It works to prevent tooth decay and cavities by coating your teeth, preventing plaque from accumulating on their surface.

We offer two varieties of fluoride:

      • Topical: Delivered via mouthwash and toothpaste
      • Systemic: Ingested through your tap water

It takes us just a few minutes during your child's dentist visit to apply fluoride.

Depending on your child's smile, we might recommend a fluoride treatment every three, six, or 12 months.

The sealants we apply provide your child's teeth with additional protection to prevent cavities and decay. A sealant is a plastic resin that bonds to the tooth. It hardens into the deep grooves on the tooth, making them less susceptible to plaque accumulation.

We usually apply sealants to a child's tooth after the adult tooth has erupted.

    • Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking can be a source of comfort for many children. While thumb sucking in general isn't a cause for concern, it could affect their oral health.

If your child gently sucks on their thumb it won't cause as much damage to their teeth. If their thumb sucking is aggressive, putting a lot of pressure on their teeth, they might encounter issues with their mouth growth and tooth alignment.

Our staff can assess your child's thumb sucking and determine if it's affecting their oral health.

    • Orthodontics

There are various benefits to getting orthodontic treatment for your child at a younger age. It's much easier to expand their palate and make room for their adult teeth before they reach their teenage years.

We'll assess your child's teeth and bite, determining if early orthodontic treatment is right for them. Our team will create a tailored treatment plan based on your child's needs and goals.

    When New Teeth Arrive

Your child’s first tooth erupts between ages 6-12 months and the remainder of their 20 primary or “baby” teeth typically erupt by age 3. During this time, gums may feel tender and sore, causing your child to feel irritable. To help alleviate this discomfort, we recommend that you soothe the gums by rubbing a clean finger or a cool, wet cloth across them. You may also choose to make use of a teething ring.

Your child’s primary teeth are shed at various times throughout childhood, and their permanent teeth begin erupting at age 6 and continue until age 21. Adults have 28 permanent teeth, or 32 including wisdom teeth.
