Teeth Cleaning Overview

Accidents happen, and sometimes your teeth are in the line of fire. But before they are, it’s helpful to know in advance what to look out for and what sort of emergencies are time dependent on getting help. Being forewarned and prepared will also prevent you from making needless trips to the dentist, especially during off-hours, since some situations can't wait until regular hours. Some typical types of oral injuries are cracked, broken, or knocked-out teeth. Incidents can result from biting too hard on food, chewing food that’s too tough for your teeth to handle, a mishap while playing sports, a bad fall, or blunt-force injuries. Other types of emergencies can provoke tooth pain besides a cracked or missing tooth. These could be from an abscess or any other number of infections.

New York, NY general and cosmetic dentist Dr. Frederick Solomon will always make your dental emergency a priority and get control of the situation before it becomes worse. Standard protocol usually defines an emergency as bleeding from the mouth, severe pain, loose teeth, being hit in the face or mouth, facial swelling, or bulging in your gums. When calling Tribeca Smiles for your emergency care, be sure to describe exactly what happened and precisely what you are feeling.

Teeth Cleaning Best Candidates

Don’t just take our word for it — the American Dental Association also advises everyone to get regular cleanings twice a year. Furthermore, anyone with teeth is a good candidate for a dental cleaning. Even if there does not seem to be anything wrong with your teeth, you are due if you haven’t had a cleaning in the last six months. Candidates for cleanings are also those who want to prevent cavities since plaque buildup, the biggest cause of tooth decay, is removed. If you’d like to prevent tooth loss, you'll also want to consider a cleaning since plaque also contributes to gum disease as it moves down your teeth and into your jawbone, compromising it and causing teeth to fall out. If you’d like to brighten your smile, freshen your breath, boost your health, and save money in the long run, a cleaning is in order.

What to Expect Teeth Cleaning

After meeting with Dr. Solomon, the professional cleaning entails removing the plaque and bacteria which have built up in your mouth (which you can’t really reach, no matter how often you brush and floss). Tartar will also be removed. This is a key feature of the cleaning since only professionals are equipped to remove tartar, also called dental calculus, which is a calcified deposit. Special instruments are needed to remove tartar without harming the tooth. The first is an ultrasonic device which loosens the bigger chunks of tartar with high-speed vibrations while spraying a lubricating mist. Then finer, handheld instruments like a curette or scaler will be used for the smaller pieces. Each tooth needs to be individually scaled to get all the tartar. Polishing and fluoride typically finish the treatment off.

Teeth Cleaning Follow-Up

If during your comprehensive examination a problem is detected in your mouth, Dr. Solomon will want to prepare a treatment plan to get you back to health. You will have a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Solomon to discuss all your choices for restoration and sedation options. In some cases, you may be treated within the same appointment. However, more extensive procedures will most likely be booked on a separate day for preparation (like a required round of antibiotics). It is important to follow all of his instructions on how to best care for your teeth until the follow-up appointment.
